The story
One second-hand ute, a borrowed trailer, and a promise
Mike Baxter spent twelve years on Christchurch building sites before the quakes changed his plans. Through 2011 and 2012 he watched crews nobody had heard of blow through his parents' street in Bishopdale, collect the insurance work, and vanish. His folks' “repaired” roof leaked within the year, and the number on the invoice rang dead.
He got his Licensed Building Practitioner ticket and opened Aegis Roofing in 2012 with one second-hand ute, a borrowed trailer, and a promise that sounds simple and turned out to be a whole business model: be here when the guarantee call comes.
Thirteen years later we’ve done over 1,800 roofs across Canterbury, 600+ insurance jobs, and we still answer guarantee calls on roofs from our first season. Mike still gets on the tools, mostly the weird ones now.
These days we’re the crew people ring for the second opinion. Our yard’s in Hornby, our kids are at school in Halswell, and when your guarantee needs honouring in year eight, we’ll be the ones answering the phone.

The quote is the invoice
Itemised, in writing, GST included, with the only variable (rotten timber at $18 per metre) printed on the contract before we start.
Photos or it didn’t happen
Every roof check, every timber issue, every finished job gets documented. You should never have to take a roofer’s word for something you can’t see from the ground.
Your roof is never left open overnight
We strip only what we can close the same day. In Canterbury, where the forecast changes its mind by lunchtime, this rule is non-negotiable.
Guarantee calls jump the queue
A guarantee issue gets scheduled ahead of new work. It’s rare, but it’s the promise the whole company was founded on.
Checkable, not claimable
